Classroom Rules & Policies
Successful Students Conduct
Students need to be attentive and ready to learn. This course, either Algebra or Calculus, may be difficult for some and may be quite easy for others. It is normal for students to excel in some areas and struggle in others. I know that Math is not everyone’s strong point and I will do my best to help everyone learn the material while making it interesting. No matter what level you are at, with effort on both our parts, you will be successful and fully prepared to move on to your next level of math by the end of the year.
Grades
Your grades will be based on homework, quizzes, tests, and classroom conduct. Homework is 30% of your grade. Quizzes are 25% of your grade. Tests are 30% of your grade. Classroom conduct (including behavior and attendance) is 15% of your grade. Percentages are as follows:
You can calculate your grades at any time. Just read the directions and you can calculate your grade.
Homework
As mentioned above, homework is 30% of your grade. This means that you need to complete your homework in order to be successful in the class. I will assign homework at least 3 times a week. I will grade each assignment out of 5 points. I will give you 3 points for simply completing the assignment, because work should be rewarded. I will then give you up to 2 more points depending on how correctly you have solved the problems. Do not be discouraged if an assignment is difficult, I am eager to help and always available!
Absences
Each student is allowed one absence without any affect on his or her grade. The second absence must be excusable with a compelling reason. Each additional absence (regardless of reasoning) will count against the student’s grade with each missed period corresponding to two percentage points taken off the student’s grade. Since there are only 15% points possible in Classroom conduct portion of the grade, if a student misses more than 7 days, harsher consequences will be introduces at my discretion.
Extra Credit
Extra Credit will be available throughout the school year as I determine. There will be one extra credit essay opportunity during Spring Break. The student may choose a topic we have learned and write a three page paper discussing how the topic is useful. More information will be given when it becomes relevant.
